This month’s SAITE meeting will be a joint UAITE and SAITE meeting at the University of Arizona Civil Engineering Building. Aside from our regular meeting presentation, we will recognize Scott Leska for his contributions to the traffic engineering profession. Scott has left the profession and now works for Raytheon. We will present a certificate recognizing his contribution as a traffic engineer in the region. Please join us for this special occasion!

The presentation information is:

TITLE/TOPIC: ADOT Adaptive Traffic Signal System

PRESENTER: Jay Gomes, ADOT

Presentation: The ADOT Adaptive Traffic Signal System in southern Arizona includes the first of its kind in Pima County, along the primary north-south route connecting Tucson and Oro Valley - State Route 77 (Oracle Road). The system can modify the length of signal cycles, including left turn signals, and can account for changes in traffic volumes and speeds. Poor traffic signal timing contributes to traffic congestion and delay. Conventional signal systems use pre-programmed, daily signal timing schedules. Adaptive signal control technology adjusts the timing of red, yellow and green lights to accommodate changing traffic patterns and ease traffic congestion. Early results showed that travel times over 8.5 miles between Tangerine Road and Rudasill Road south of Orange Grove Road have been reduced by about 10 percent. This presentation will provide an overview of ADOT Adaptive Signal System in southern Arizona as well as an update of how the system has improved traffic operations.
