Description

Presentation: 24/7 Video-Sensor-Based Traffic Data Collection – Lesson Learned and Best Practices in the City of Tucson

Presenters: Yao-Jan Wu (U of A) & Paul Burton (City of Tucson)

Vehicle detection sensors for traffic signal control and operations are deployed throughout our traffic signal networks. The City of Tucson has more than one thousand video-based vehicle detectors. These sensors have traditionally been configured for traffic signal control but not for data collection. This presentation will discuss how video-based sensors can be used for data collection; how this data can help traffic engineers with re-timing and performance measurement; and how transportation planners can also benefit from this inexpensively collected data. This presentation is based on collaborative research between the UA and the City of Tucson. Benefits of this project are expected to improve traffic operations and transportation planning thorough the region.
